How Much Paint Do I Need? A Simple Guide to Calculating Paint Coverage
One of the most common questions we hear at Haverhill Paint Supplies is, "How much paint do I need?" Buy too little and you'll be making an extra trip to the shop halfway through the job. Buy too much and you're left with unused tins taking up space in the garage.
Fortunately, calculating paint requirements is easier than you might think. In this guide, we'll show you how to work out exactly how much paint you'll need for your next decorating project.
Why It's Important to Calculate Paint Correctly
Accurate paint calculations help you:
- Avoid running out of paint halfway through a project.
- Save money by not purchasing unnecessary extra paint.
- Ensure colour consistency across walls and ceilings.
- Reduce waste and environmental impact.
Whether you're painting a single feature wall or redecorating an entire house, a few simple measurements can make all the difference.
Step 1: Measure Your Walls
Start by measuring the height and width of each wall.
For example:
- Wall Height: 2.4 metres
- Wall Width: 4 metres
Multiply these figures together:
2.4m × 4m = 9.6 square metres
Repeat this process for each wall and add the totals together.
Step 2: Subtract Doors and Windows
There's no need to paint windows and most doors, so subtract these areas from your total.
As a rough guide:
- Standard door = approximately 2 square metres
- Average window = approximately 1.5 to 2 square metres
For example:
Total wall area = 40m²
Minus one door = 2m²
Minus two windows = 4m²
Paintable area = 34m²
Step 3: Check the Paint Coverage
Most paint manufacturers state the coverage rate on the tin.
A typical emulsion covers approximately:
10–14 square metres per litre per coat
However, coverage can vary depending on:
- Surface condition
- Paint colour
- Porosity of the substrate
- Application method
- Number of coats required
Always check the manufacturer's guidance before purchasing.
Step 4: Factor in Multiple Coats
Most decorating projects require at least two coats for an even, durable finish.
Using our example:
Paintable area = 34m²
Two coats = 68m² total coverage required
If your chosen paint covers 12m² per litre:
68 ÷ 12 = 5.7 litres
In this case, purchasing a 7.5-litre container would provide sufficient coverage with a little extra for touch-ups.
Don't Forget Ceilings and Woodwork
When planning your project, remember to calculate paint separately for:
Ceilings
Measure the room's floor area, as ceiling dimensions generally match the floor dimensions.
Skirting Boards and Architraves
These often require specialist trim paints or eggshell finishes, which may have different coverage rates.
Doors
Interior and exterior doors usually need separate calculations, particularly if painting both sides.
When You Might Need More Paint
Consider purchasing extra paint if:
- You're covering a dark colour with a light colour.
- The surface has never been painted before.
- Walls are heavily textured.
- Repairs have been made using filler.
- You're using a particularly deep or vibrant colour.
These situations often require additional coats to achieve full coverage.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
For most standard rooms, two coats of quality emulsion will require approximately:
1 litre of paint for every 6–7 square metres of wall area.
This provides a useful starting point when budgeting for a decorating project.
