Collection: Adhesives, Caulks & Sealants

Small cracks around skirting boards, window frames and door edges can spoil an otherwise neat decorating job. Our decorators' caulk, adhesives and sealants give you practical options for filling gaps, sealing joints and bonding materials, whether you are touching up one room or preparing a full house for painting.

 Decorators Caulk, Adhesives & Sealants

Choose from water-based caulk, silicone, paintable sealant and adhesive products for interior and exterior applications. Check each product before use, as paintability, weather resistance and suitability for moisture or outdoor conditions can vary.

What is Decorators caulk best used for?

Decorators caulk is ideal for small gaps and cracks where surfaces meet, including skirting boards, plaster, walls, window frames and doors. Many products can be painted once dry, making caulk useful when you want the repair to blend into the finished surface.

Remove loose material and dust first. Apply a steady bead, smooth it before a skin forms and leave it for the recommended drying time. Temperature, humidity and joint depth can all affect drying time and when the product is fully cured.

Caulking and silicone: what’s the difference?

Caulking and silicone may look similar in the tube, but they do different jobs. Decorators caulk is generally used for paintable interior joints and fine gaps. Silicone is usually chosen where greater flexibility or resistance to water and moisture is needed.

Not every silicone can be painted, and not every caulk is suitable externally or exposed to rain. Always read the product information, especially if the joint needs to be weather-resistant or may be affected by mould or movement.

Do you need caulk, sealant or adhesive?

A quick way to narrow the choice is to ask what the product needs to do:

  • Filling a small gap before painting? Choose a decorator's caulk or another suitable paintable product.
  • Sealing a joint exposed to water or movement? Look for a silicone or sealant recommended for that application.
  • Bonding two materials together? Choose an adhesive or a hybrid adhesive and sealant designed to do both.

When should you choose a paintable sealant?

A paintable sealant is useful when a joint needs some flexibility but will also form part of the painted finish. It can work well around boards, trim and doors where a rigid filler may crack as surfaces move over time.

For crisp paint lines after sealing, browse our masking tapes. If old material or rough edges need removing first, our abrasives can help with preparation.

How do you get a smooth, professional finish?

Start with a clean, dry joint, then cut the nozzle to suit the width of the gap. Apply even pressure and tool the bead while it is still workable.

Allow the product to cure for the time stated on the tube before painting or exposing it to water. For workplace use, follow the manufacturer’s safety information and the HSE guidance on hazardous substances.
